About

Dan Futrell is a veteran fellow for the academic year 2025-26 at the Hoover Institution.

Futrell is the founder of Polymath University, a nonprofit university that is interdisciplinary, apprenticeship-based, and debt-free. He has led nonprofit, private, government, and military organizations, and most recently served as CEO of the Pat Tillman Foundation. Futrell’s work in education is driven by his early years in foster care and later being raised by a single dad who worked rotating shifts at an insulation factory for fifty years.

After attending college on an ROTC scholarship, he served five years as an airborne ranger–qualified infantry officer at home and in combat for which he was twice awarded a Bronze Star Medal and the Combat Infantryman Badge. He later served as an elected official on a K–12 school board outside of Boston, Massachusetts, for six years where he oversaw budgeting and led initiatives to support whole child education. Futrell holds a master’s and bachelor’s degree from Harvard and Gonzaga Universities.
