Minister-President Volker Bouffier, the 9th Minister-President of the German State of Hesse, joined Hoover fellows for a Leadership Forum roundtable at the Hoover Institution on Friday, May 6. The Minister-President and the Hessen delegation explained the Syrian refugee situation Germany and other European nations are facing as a result of the Syrian Civil War. Following the Minister-President’s remarks, a selection of national security and foreign policy experts from the Hoover Institution engaged in a thoughtful discussion on this and other relevant and timely issues.

Volker Bouffier became the 9th Minister-President of Hesse in August 2010. He is a member of the CDU and has served as the Vice-Chairman of Hesse CDU between 1991 and June 2010 and since June 2010 has served as chairman of Hesse CDU. Between November 2014 and October 2015, Volker was the 69th President of the Bundesrat. From 1987 to 1991, Volker was the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Justice of Hesse and then from 1999 to 2010 was the Minister of the Interior and of Sport in Hesse.  Volker is an attorney having graduated from Gießen University.

Friday’s roundtable was part of the Hoover Institution’s Leadership Forum program, which seeks to engage influential policy leaders with the Institution, its scholars, and its supporters. In the past, the Leadership Forum has hosted former Governor Jeb Bush of Florida, Senator Rob Portman of Ohio, Governor Scott Walker of Wisconsin, Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, former World Bank President, Robert Zoellick, former Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich, and, Mayor Chuck Reed of San Jose, among others.
