In his keynote address at the IAM Patent Law and Policy conference in Washington, DC, US Senator Chris Coons (D-DE) recommended to the audience Hoover senior fellow Stephen Haber’s paper “Patents and the Wealth of Nations.”

In his concluding remarks at the symposium, Senator Coons, questioned the series of attacks on the US patent system, counseled against dismantling the patent system, and warned that our country’s competitors are strengthening their patent systems. He highlighted Haber’s paper and noted that it makes the case for the connection between strong patents and successful innovative countries.

Haber is the director of the Hoover Institution Working Group on Intellectual Property, Innovation, and Prosperity (Hoover IP²). Senator Coons was a featured speaker at Hoover IP²’s October 2017 DC symposium Rekindling American Innovation, Economic Growth, and Job Creation.

Hoover IP²’s goal is to support and produce a body of impactful scholarship that examines the effect of intellectual property rights on innovation, and economic growth. Using an interdisciplinary and empirical approach, Haber notes that Hoover IP2 “brings data to a rhetoric fight.”

The next Hoover IP² event is its semi-annual winter conference. The conference, Patent Practices and Policy: The Backbone of the Innovation Economy, will be held at Hoover on January 11-12, 2018.
