Brendan Greeley, former Financial Times journalist and current PhD history student at Princeton University, presents his paper, “Bottomed and Sunk: Valuing Early Bills of Credit as Financial Contracts.”

Christopher Meissner, professor of economics at University of California–Davis, discusses Greeley’s paper.

William Goetzmann, professor of finance and management studies at the Yale School of Management, presents “Convergent Evolution of the Joint-Stock Company,” a paper he coauthored with Sebastien Pouget of the Toulouse School of Economics and David Le Bris of the Toulouse Business School.

Oxford University professor of history Catherine Schenk presents her paper, “Moving Money: Redesigning the Global Payments System 1969–1999.”

Caroline Frohlin, professor of economics at Emory University, presents “Finance Capitalism in Industrializing Autocracies: Evidence from Corporate Balance Sheets in Imperial Germany and Russia,” a paper she coauthored with Amanda Gregg, professor of economics at Middlebury College.

Catherine Schenk gave the lunch keynote address on the evolution of global payments systems from the early twentieth century to today.

Lawrence White, professor of economics at George Mason University, presents his paper, “Classical Liberal Perspectives on Banking and Financial Regulation.”

Peter van Valkenburgh, director of research at the Coin Center, presents his paper, “Electronic Cash, Decentralized Exchange, and the Fourth Amendment.”

Harold James, professor of history, international relations, and European studies at Princeton University, gives the dinner keynote address, in which he describes how the relationships between governing institutions and private firms have shaped modern financial systems.
