A new Great Game, a term referring to the historical rivalry between Russia and Britain in South and Central Asia, is taking place on the geopolitical chessboard of the region, albeit with different competitors. China’s growing influence in Afghanistan is a recent and concerning development. Already, the Chinese government has capitalized on the opportunities offered by the U.S. withdrawal and the subsequent collapse of the Afghan government in the summer of 2021 to fill the ensuing power vacuum.
