Renewing Indigenous Economies Project Convenes Tribal Leaders in Washington, DC

In his opening remarks to the panel discussion, Stewart highlighted the annual Hoover Indigenous Student Seminar, which he directs each summer at the Stanford University campus.

Richard Monette, professor of law at the University of Wisconsin and member of the Turtle Mountain Band of the Chippewa Tribe (left), and Hoover senior fellow Terry Anderson (right) participated in a panel discussion in Washington, DC, that brought forth ideas about how Native Americans can regain their prosperity without having to abandon their unique and rich cultural traditions.

Richard Monette outlined the differences between tribal law and federal Indian law and discussed practices employed by the federal government that inhibit Indigenous land ownership. 

Audiences of policy makers, scholars, and tribal leaders gathered at the Hoover Institution’s office in Washington, DC, to hear a panel discussion featuring scholars and Native American leaders, which was presented by Hoover’s Project on Renewing Indigenous Economies.

Tribal entrepreneur Terry Brockie discussed his expertise and experiences as an Indigenous business manager of Island Development Group, a company dedicated to advancing opportunities for tribal nations and citizens in a diverse set of industries.
