Hoover Institution (Stanford, CA)—Today’s Battlegrounds with H.R. McMaster returns this fall with an impressive lineup of guests from around the world.
The first broadcast of the new season goes live on October 20, with former Peruvian president Francisco Sagasti.
Sagasti served as the 62nd president of Peru from November 2020 to July 2021, steering the country through agrarian unrest and the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
His government managed to procure vaccines for the majority of its population and settled major farmworkers’ strikes in outlying areas.
An engineer by training who acquired a PhD at the University of Pennsylvania, Sagasti led the centrist Purple Party.
McMaster’s discussion with Sagasti is particularly timely as Peru impeached and removed its president, Dina Boluarte, earlier this month.
She was replaced by 38-year-old conservative lawmaker José Jerí, who becomes one of the youngest heads of state in the world, leading a nation contending with serious corruption concerns, endemic crime, and rising economic uncertainty.
Now in its fifth year of production, Today’s Battlegrounds features Hoover Institution Senior Fellow H.R. McMaster in a one-on-one conversation with a senior foreign government leader to allow Americans and partners abroad to understand how the past produced the present and how we might work together to secure a peaceful and prosperous future.
In the past 12 months, episodes have included conversations with Czech President Petr Pavel, former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, exiled Belarussian political leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, and former Lithuanian foreign minister Gabrielius Landsbergis.
Topics the latest season will tackle include the aftermath of the Israel-Hamas conflict, the electoral picture in Eastern Europe, US security considerations in the Indo-Pacific, and the evolving situation in the Americas.
