STANFORD, CA - The Hoover Institution at Stanford University is pleased to announce that Dr. Kiron K. Skinner has returned as the W. Glenn Campbell Research Fellow. In 2018–19, she took a leave of absence to serve as the Director of the Office of Policy Planning at the State Department as well as Senior Advisor to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. In 2020–21, she was a member of the US Defense Department’s Defense Business Board and was nominated to be its Vice Chairman.

Condoleezza Rice, Director of the Hoover Institution, said: “I am excited to welcome Kiron back, as she is a tremendous resource on foreign policy and international relations and has had a robust career with both academic and real-world experience, resulting in the invaluable insights she brings to her research.”

While at Hoover as a Research Fellow, she was a member of three important projects at the Institution: the Shultz-Stephenson Task Force on Energy Policy; the working group on the Role of Military History in Contemporary Conflict; and the Arctic Security Initiative. Prior to joining Hoover, Kiron was a transformative figure at Carnegie Mellon University. She is an award-winning best-selling author and has had a distinguished career in government service.

Professor Skinner holds MA and PhD degrees in political science and international relations from Harvard University and undergraduate degrees from Spelman College and Sacramento City College. She received an honorary doctor of laws degree from Molloy College, Long Island.
