Colonel David F. Aumuller

Colonel David F. Aumuller, US Marine Corps, was a national security affairs fellow for 2006–2007 at the Hoover Institution.

Commissioned in 1984 upon graduation from the US Naval Academy, he was designated an Air Command and Control Officer in 1985 and has served in multiple operational assignments in all three active component Marine Aircraft Wings and as an Exchange Officer with the Royal Air Force in Scotland. He has participated in Operations DESERT SHIELD, DESERT STORM, ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM, wherein his command was responsible for the complex airspace control plan during combat operations in Fallujah. Colonel Aumuller is a distinguished graduate of the Marine Corps’ Command and Staff College, and a graduate of the School of Advanced Warfighting. Colonel Aumuller earned his Masters Degree in Military Studies from the Marine Corps University in 1999, focusing on the research and development of automated command and control systems within the Marine Corps during the 1960s, and the historical backdrop it provides in regards to transformation. He has also served as an Action Officer at Marine Corps Forces Atlantic, covering transformation, counter-drug operations, and air command and control deployment issues. Immediately after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, Colonel Aumuller served as a lead planner for detainee operations and the initial offensive operations for Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. Colonel Aumuller intends to focus his research on the relationship between the State and Defense Departments in developing National, Military, and Diplomatic strategies in the post cold war era, with a specific analysis of the 1986 Goldwater-Nichols Defense Reorganization Act, and it’s impact on diplomacy.
