About the Issue
With the Beijing Winter Olympics drawing closer, human rights advocates continue to shine a spotlight on the striking abuses perpetrated by the Chinese Communist Party within its borders and around the world. Despite an avalanche of activism and global attention, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) remains ambivalent, unwilling to criticize its current host country. Even while Germany joined a growing cohort of states enacting some version of a diplomatic boycott—foreign minister Annalena Baerbock announced she would not attend the games—the IOC has refused to condemn Beijing for perpetrating a Genocide against religious minorities and exporting its authoritarian methods.
