Behind the scenes these past few days, African American academic and political leadrs have been searching for the right publlic voice with which to respond to an op-ed page piece that appeared in the New York Times on Friday April 23. Authored by Harvard scholar and White House beer guzzler, Henry Louis Gates, Jr., the piece argues against reparations for slavery paid by contemparary whites to contemporary black Americans, that's right, to all of them. The theory is similar to that oef any tort case: A, whether carelessly or deliberately, injures B. B is entitled to compensation, soometimes on a dollar for dollar basis, other times with punitive or exemplary damages added to the pot.
