Abstraction may not be the last refuge of scoundrels, but for those lacking confidence in their power of prognostication, it furnishes something of a convenient retreat. That being the case, permit me to explore the GOP’s cherished goal of retaking the House of Representatives even before the cold cash in Rep. William Jefferson’s freezer has had a chance to defrost.

First, will the president score something widely recognized as a victory in his effort to prevent Iran (period!) from continuing its advance toward nuclear weapons? Nothing would do more to destabilize the region and, for that matter, the world. Nothing would more mock Mr. Obama’s restart to relations with the Russians than tepid Russian assistance punctuated by blowhard claims of diplomatic dare ‘n do.
