Along the lines of “what if they held an election and nobody came?”, here’s something else to ponder: what if they bothered to vote, but no one was manning the polling stations?

That’s the question being asked by California Secretary of State Debra Bowen, who yesterday put out an SOS to civic-minded Californians, asking for their help in staffing the nation-state’s 22,000 voting locales for the June primary.

“Poll workers are truly ambassadors of democracy because they are the most important people voters deal with on Election Day,” said Bowen. “By protecting voters’ rights, securing ballots and ensuring accessibility to the polling place, poll workers are key to the success of every election.”

Riiiight.
