Prisoner

Hoover has acquired a WWI-era photograph album created by Frank George Ascherl, who in 1919 served as a United States Prisoner of War Escort, guarding German prisoners held in French and Belgian prisons such as Is-sur-Tille, Malancourt, Sampigny, Pagny-sur-Meuse, and Romagne sous Montfaucon. The album includes photographs of German prisoners on kitchen duty, in billets, and playing baseball. Above, members of Ascherl's Prisoner of War Escort corps are pictured with their prized mascots––a donkey, dog, bunny, and bird.
