Across its history, America has developed an array of institutions to preserve and advance our nation. Yet today, many citizens have lost confidence in these institutions. Correspondingly, scholars have identified a range of challenges US institutions are facing, including ones related to legitimacy, capacity, polarization, and recent technologies that are altering the ways citizens receive and engage with political information. Is the US facing a constitutional crisis? Even if not, has an empowered presidency and administrative state stripped Congress and the courts of their traditional authorities? And how does political polarization relate to the ways both political institutions such as elections and purportedly apolitical ones such as corporations operate?
The conference Challenges in American Institutions, held at the Hoover Institution, will explore these and related issues.
Conference presentations will occur in Blount Hall, Traitel Building.
