This talk is the public keynote speech for the annual conference of the Project on Taiwan in the Indo-Pacific Region. This year’s conference theme is “Taiwan’s Economic Security in a Changing Global Environment.” Minister Deng will speak about recent efforts by Taiwan and the United States to deepen the bilateral economic relationship, advance mutual trade priorities based on shared values, and promote innovation and inclusive economic growth for their workers and businesses.

SPEAKER BIOS

John Chen-Chung Deng is Minister without Portfolio and Chief Trade Representative of the Republic of China (Taiwan), a position he has held since August 2016. In that role, he has been at the forefront of recent U.S-Taiwan talks on trade and supply chain issues. A career civil servant, Minister Deng has worked in both KMT and DPP administrations and has decades of experience managing Taiwan’s economic and security affairs.

Larry Diamond is the William L. Clayton Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, the Mosbacher Senior Fellow in Global Democracy at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI), and a Bass University Fellow in Undergraduate Education at Stanford University. He is also professor, by courtesy, of political science and sociology at Stanford. He co-chairs the Hoover Institution’s programs on China’s Global Sharp Power and on Taiwan in the Indo-Pacific Region.
