Chris Starling, US Marine Corps (Ret.), was a national security affairs fellow for 2007–2008 at the Hoover Institution.

Chris graduated from the Virginia Military Institute and was commissioned as an infantry officer in 1988. He has served in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Marine Divisions. He participated in Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm, and Iraqi Freedom. Most recently he was the Commanding Officer of Battalion Landing Team 2/2, completing his fifth deployment to the Persian Gulf in July 2007. Other previous assignments include service in the US Pacific Command’s Counter-Drug Inter-Agency Task Force in Alameda, CA and as an Assistant Professor of Military Science at the US Military Academy, West Point. He has a Masters of Public Administration degree from John Jay College, City University of New York. His research at Hoover will focus on current and future national security issues.
