About

William Marble is a Hoover fellow at the Hoover Institution. He is a political scientist whose research examines how political coalitions form and evolve, with a focus on how structural economic factors and social context influence political outcomes.

Marble’s current work investigates the political realignment along educational and class lines in the United States. He shows how shifting issue salience over the past fifty years—especially the rise of social and cultural issues—has reshaped party coalitions and reversed the traditional class alignment of the major parties.

His other projects explore how social environments influence political attitudes and behaviors. This includes research on how informal social networks, internal migration, and exposure to popular culture shape political views.

Marble also develops statistical methods to improve the measurement and interpretation of public opinion. His methodological work enhances the ability to analyze nonrepresentative survey data and to draw evidence-based conclusions about electoral outcomes and mass opinion.

Before joining Hoover, Marble was a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for the Study of Democratic Politics at Princeton University and worked at the University of Pennsylvania’s Program for Opinion Research and Election Studies. He holds a PhD in political science from Stanford University.
