Hoover’s many Chinese collections document political, economic, and social developments during the revolution of 1911, the warlord period, the civil war, and the post-1949 period. Holdings on pre-1949 Republican China, including Nationalist government documents and Chinese Communist Party materials, are particularly robust. The Marco Polo Bridge Incident of July 1937 marked the beginning of the second Sino-Japanese War that would last for the next eight years. For the four and half years before Pearl Harbor, Nationalist China under Chiang Kai-shek fought a lone and bitter war with the Japanese.
This month Hoover Library & Archives congratulates Dr. Hsiao-ting Lin, Curator for Modern China, whose book Accidental State: Chiang Kai-shek, the United States, and the Making of Taiwan (Harvard University Press, 2016) received the 2017 Kingstone Award for Most Influential Book of the Year in Taiwan.
Stanford PhD candidate and Silas Palmer research fellow Mei Li Inouye describes her research on Jiang Qing (1914-1991)—also known as Madame Mao—and official gender discourses over a tumultuous six decades in modern Chinese history.
The third annual Hoover Institution Workshop on Modern China, entitled “China and Its Neighbors: What History Can Tell Policy Makers,” was held during August 3-7, 2015. This year the workshop featured five speakers from the United States and Japan who evaluated the rise of China and assessed China’s impact on neighboring states’ policy planning.

The second annual Hoover Institution workshop on modern China was held during August 4-5, 2014. Organized by archives staff, the workshop featured eight scholars from Europe, East Asia, and the United States who have done research in Hoover’s collections.
Former state councilor of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) Dai Bingguo, accompanied by his wife, Madame Huang Hao, visited the Hoover Institution Library and Archives on January 17, 2014. The delegation was led by Cui Tiankai (PRC ambassador to the United States) and Yuan Nansheng (San Francisco PRC consul general).
