About

Dr. Aymenn Jawad Al-Tamimi is a historian, translator, and analyst whose research focuses on Iraq, Syria, jihadism, and medieval Iberia. He graduated with a BA in classics and oriental studies from the University of Oxford and completed his PhD at Swansea University, where he focused on the role of historical narratives in Islamic State propaganda and received the university's James Callaghan Thesis Prize for best doctoral thesis in 2024–25. Among his research projects is an online archive of internal Islamic State administrative documents that has proven invaluable for research on the Islamic State's internal structure and administration in Iraq and Syria during the period 2014–19. He has also spent extensive time on the ground doing field reporting on all sides of the conflict in Syria, having published reports in the Middle East Quarterly and the Middle East Review of International Affairs. For his insights on jihadist groups and Syria, he has been quoted in a wide variety of media outlets, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Agence France-Presse.

In addition to his writings on jihadist groups and Syria, Al-Tamimi also focuses on medieval Iberian history, having recently produced a translation and study of the anonymous Arabic text Fatḥ al-Andalus (The Conquest of al-Andalus) for Routledge. He is also due to publish a translation and study for Manchester University Press of the Historiae Minores (Minor Histories) of Archbishop Rodrigo Ximénez de Rada (d. 1247 CE), which includes his Historia Arabum (History of the Arabs)—the first surviving Western monograph of Arab and Islamic history. Al-Tamimi has research competency in numerous languages including Latin, Ancient Greek, English, Arabic, and Spanish.
