2017 Summer Board of Overseers Meeting

Condoleezza Rice, the Thomas and Barbara Stephenson Senior Fellow at Hoover and sixty-sixth US secretary of state, sat down for a discussion with director Tom Gilligan based on her new book Democracy: Stories from the Long Road to Freedom.

Thomas W. and Susan B. Ford Distinguished Fellow George P. Shultz, who served as sixtieth US secretary of state under President Regan in addition to three other cabinet posts, joined overseers for dinner and participated in the Q&A period with Rice.

Guests at the meeting enjoyed a behind-the-scenes tour as crews put the finishing touches on the David and Joan Traitel Building. This photo looks from the glass- walled welcoming pavilion to the reception area.

Guests test the theater-style seats in Hauck Auditorium, the Traitel Building’s four hundred–seat venue named for Hoover overseer Everett “Sparky” Hauck and his wife, Jane. Seated third and fourth from the left are Joel Peterson, chairman of Hoover’s Board of Overseers, and his wife, Diana, who recently funded the new Peterson Family Lecture series that will be held in the auditorium.

Edward P. Lazear, the Morris Arnold and Nona Jean Cox Senior Fellow at Hoover and former chairman of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers under President Bush, briefs overseers on his recent advisory work with the Trump administration.

Niall Ferguson, recently named the Milbank Family Senior Fellow at Hoover, delivered the second dinner talk of the event titled “The Paradoxes of a Connected World.”
