
Commander Steve Newlund
Steve Newlund, representing the US Navy, was a national security affairs fellow for the academic year 2013–14 at the Hoover Institution.
Newlund is a 1992 graduate of the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, with a bachelor of science in oceanography. He has a master’s degree from the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, in national security and strategic studies. Initially designated a surface warfare officer, Newlund served as the navigator aboard USS Gunston Hall (LSD-44), where he was twice deployed to the Mediterranean Sea. In 1997, he was designated a naval aviator. He has served in numerous positions within his four maritime squadrons during five Western Pacific and Middle Eastern deployments in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, and Tomadachi, attaining more than three thousand hours in P-3C Orion aircraft. Ashore, Newlund has served at US Strategic Command and Navy Personnel Command. His most significant career milestone was serving as the commander of Patrol Squadron FOUR, based at Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.
