Colonel Sean McEwen serves as a national security affairs fellow at the Hoover Institution for the academic year 2025-26, where he focuses on advancing research and dialogue on national security strategy, leadership, and the future of warfare. Commissioned as an army officer in 2002, he has served in diverse command and staff positions throughout his twenty-three-year Army career.

His most recent assignments include serving as commander of an artillery battalion in the historic 101st Airborne Division, followed by a senior staff position at US Africa Command. Other assignments include experience in the Indo-Pacific; deployments to the Middle East; and policy, research, and community engagement positions in the National Capital Region.

As a Hoover fellow, he aims to broaden his perspective beyond the traditional military sphere, engaging with scholars, policymakers, and industry leaders to advance innovative approaches to national security challenges. His research interests include civil-military relations, strategic competition, and the evolving character of war. He is committed to mentoring emerging leaders, fostering thoughtful dialogue on the future of American security, and supporting the veteran community through advocacy and engagement. Colonel McEwen holds a Master of Education from the George Washington University.
