This week’s issue includes the European Commission’s toolkit for mitigating foreign interference in research and innovation, while the Commission carefully tries to be agnostic about which country might pose these threats to European research integrity it isn’t difficult to read between the lines that the People’s Republic of China is the principal “threat actor”; EU Member Slovenia announced its intention to follow Lithuania’s lead in challenging the Chinese Communist Party by strengthening ties with Taiwan; the non-profit, Safeguard Defenders published a report on how the Chinese Communist Party continues to pursue extra-territorial kidnappings and threats to families as a way to silence dissidents and others the Party considers to be “fugitives”; and the French Parliament puts President Macron, who plans to send a minister to the Beijing Olympics, in a difficult position by overwhelmingly passing a resolution labelling Beijing’s treatment of Uyghurs as genocide and crimes against humanity.  The resolution passed the French Parliament by a vote of 169 to 1 with only a single member of President Macron’s La Republique En Marche (LREM) party voting against it.
