Doughnut Lassies on World War I Posters

Political posters are powerful tools of persuasion and control via striking visual imagery. Scholarly interest in the strong visual images draws many researchers to Hoover's voluminous poster collection. Others mine more popular parts of the collection, such as this CBC article on National Doughnut Day, which highlights posters of US troops receiving doughnuts and coffee from Salvation Army doughnut lassies during World War I.

On Tuesday, May 15, 2012, a group of participants led by Victor David Hanson, the Martin and Illie Anderson Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, met to discuss the newly created Project for the Study of Military History and Contemporary Conflict. The project will reflect how military operations intersect with public policy and ideas defining a free society and offer commentary on current military operations in the context of military history. The participants include military historians, analysts, journalists, and military officers. Hoover research fellows Bruce Thornton, Joseph Felter, and Gil-li Vardi are among the participants.

WHAM: Winning Hearts and Minds in Afghanistan and Elsewhere

Dr. Henriksen argues that America needs to get back to the basics of
counterinsurgency lest it bankrupts itself in nation-building and
reconstruction projects that are driven from the top, not the bottom. Citing
tremendously expensive “winning hearts and minds” (WHAM) efforts in
Iraq and Afghanistan, he hypothesizes that “WHAM operations must be
waged with much less expenditure of U.S. dollars in the years ahead.” He
offers Britain’s frugal victory in Malaya as one example of a low-budget
counterinsurgency success that started with protecting the people, over
time formed a representative government, and linked the people and their
support to that government. Economic development was part of the strategy,
but it was a supporting and complementary effort, not a major effort
in and of itself.

On Thursday, April 19, 2012, a five-member delegation from the Estonian Parliament, including Marko Mihkelson, chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee; Sven Mikser, chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Estonia; Kadri Simson; Imre Sooäär; and Birgit Leppik, secretary, visited the Hoover Institution Library and Archives to examine materials from the Baltics, mainly Estonia. All are members of the Foreign Affairs Committee, which oversees Estonia’s relations with other states and international organizations and maintains contacts with foreign affairs committees of the parliaments of other countries. Andrus Viirg, director of Enterprise Estonia Silicon Valley, joined members of the delegation on their visit.

Documenting Soviet Crimes in Estonia

The Hoover Institution and the National Archives of Estonia have signed an agreement of cooperation for digitizing and sharing records pertaining to Estonia. The first project will be Hoover Archives’ acquiring copies of selected groups of records of the NKVD and of its successor, the KGB of the former Estonian SSSR.
