Well before his days as a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, as a freshly minted lieutenant Richard Burress landed on Iwo Jima in February 1945 and led a platoon on Marines through that epic battle. Burress recently met with today’s members of his unit (1st Battalion of the 23rd Marine Regiment), which is being deployed to Afghanistan, to share with them his World War II experiences and lessons learned not only in battle but also in civilian life.
After his distinguished career as a Marine officer, Burress obtained his law degree, was an FBI agent, and served as legal counsel on Capitol Hill and in the White House during the Nixon, Ford, and Reagan administrations. He was appointed a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution in 1974.
