Carlos X. Lastra-Anadón is a visiting fellow at the Hoover Institution and an assistant professor at IE’s School of Politics, Economics, and Global Affairs. He earned a PhD in government and social policy at Harvard University and has an undergraduate degree from Oxford University. He has been a postdoctoral fellow at The Europe Center at Stanford University, a visiting scholar at the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies at Harvard and at King’s College London, and has been a fellow at University College London’s Centre on US Politics.

His work focuses on education policy and other durable public investments and their connection with politics, in particular how investments can lead to better institutions and better politics. In his current projects, he has examined how classroom practices can mitigate misinformation, how place-based policies in the EU context can mitigate public discontent, and how teachers’ unions affect political participation. His work has been published in outlets such as the Journal of Politics, Political Science Research and Methods, Electoral Studies, and Governance. His research has been founded by La Caixa Foundation, the Ramón Areces Foundation, the British Academy, and the Fulbright Commission.

Before embarking on an academic career, he was a consultant working across the public and private sectors in Spain, the Middle East, Latin America, and the United States, lately specializing in education policy and finance.
