The Hoover Archives recently uploaded to YouTube two Crusade for Freedom sound recordings that offer insight into international relations in 1951. The Crusade for Freedom prepared the programs to raise funds for Radio Free Europe (RFE) and Radio Liberty (RL). The Radio Free Europe Story explained to an American audience the activities of RFE.   The breadth of the radio programming was wide, featuring messages home from expatriates, popular music, news reports, religious programs, and a program naming alleged regime collaborators and spies.

Sergei Dmitrievich Sazonov was imperial Russia’s foreign minister from 1910 to 1916, making these papers a rich resource for the study of the events leading up to and involving Russia in the First World War. The majority of the papers consists of Sazonov’s memoirs, published in Russian, French, and English in 1927 and 1928. In processing of the collection we discovered material that had not appeared in print, including the final chapter. . . .

Yuri Yarim-Agaev was already a distinguished physicist when, in the 1970s, he joined the Moscow Helsinki Group, the dissident organization set up to monitor Soviet compliance with the human rights provisions of the Helsinki Accords. Fellow members of the organization included physicist Yuri Orlov and Yelena Bonner, wife of Andrei Sakharov. Yarim-Agaev, now a financial analyst in New York, devotes much of his time to ensuring that the evils of Soviet communism are never forgotten.
